Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
In people with thalassemia, the body does not produce enough hemoglobin, which can lead to anemia. Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen.
