Purpose of the Test
To measure the rate at which red blood cells sediment in a period of 1 hour as an indication of inflammation.
Principle
Red blood cells form rouleaux stacks under the influence of plasma proteins such as fibrinogen and immunoglobulins. These rouleaux settle faster than individual cells. The ESR is a non-specific measure of inflammatory activity.
Equipments
1. ESR RAK
2. ESR tube (3.8% sodium citrate in a 4:1 ratio.)
Sample Type
Whole blood anticoagulated with EDTA. Fresh samples should be tested within 2 hours.
Procedure
1. Fill the ESR tube to the 0 line and Mix whole blood and 3.8% sodium citrate in a 4:1 ratio.
2. place in ESR RAK.
3. Read the level of plasma column after 30 minutes.
4. Report ESR result in mm at the end of 1 hour.
Reference range:
Male: 0-15 mm/hr
Female: 0-20 mm/hr
Normal Range
Quality Control:
1. Run two levels of control with each batch of samples.
2. Results should fall within established confidence limits.
3. it is better to repeat the test at least 3 times and then determine the final result
Warning :
1. Abnormal RBC morphology, anemia and polycythemia affect results.
2. Results are methodology and temperature dependent.
